An Interview with Jennifer Householder, Director of Business Development

At Pentaflex, we pride ourselves on the strength of our team and the industry expertise we bring to every partnership. We’re excited to welcome Jennifer as our new Director of Business Development. With nearly two decades of experience in automotive tier sales and a career shaped by a passion for manufacturing, she brings a wealth of knowledge, strategic insight, and an unwavering commitment to innovation and growth. We sat down with Jennifer to learn more about her professional journey, what drew her to Pentaflex, and how she plans to help lead us into the future.

Can you share more about your professional career before joining Pentaflex?

I’ve spent nearly 20 years in automotive tier sales, building a broad and in-depth understanding of the industry. My experience spans metal stampings, coatings, assemblies, sound-dampening materials, and specialized components like cargo and tire floor lids, as well as door hole seal technologies.

Returning to the world of metal stampings and assemblies at this stage in my career feels like coming home—it’s where my journey began and where my passion remains strongest.

What are your primary responsibilities as Director of Business Development at Pentaflex?

At Pentaflex, my primary responsibilities focus on expanding business opportunities with our existing customer base, while also identifying and cultivating relationships with prospective clients by effectively communicating our manufacturing capabilities and industry expertise.

A key part of this role involves close collaboration with my colleagues to gain a deep understanding of how Pentaflex has positioned itself as a full-service metal stamping provider, and how that vision aligns with both our current initiatives and long-term strategic objectives.

Together, we are developing and executing the company’s future business plan to ensure sustainable growth and continued success.

How did you find yourself in the manufacturing industry?

My first job during college was with a Japanese automotive parts manufacturer, and it sparked a deep interest in the industry. I was part of a team dedicated to bringing an OEM’s new model program to life—a process that typically happens every 5 to 10 years.

Being involved in that first program launch had a lasting impact on me, and I was hooked. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside incredibly talented individuals who not only deepened my understanding of specific products but also shared the underlying philosophy of manufacturing. It’s this mindset—the commitment to precision, innovation, and continuous improvement—that drives people like me to choose this field over any other.

What skills have you learned throughout your career that will assist you in your new role at Pentaflex?

I think some of the most useful skills I’ve learned are industry knowledge, relationship-building, and strategic thinking. First, understanding both the technical aspects of the products being made and the market demands is critical—knowing what you’re making, why you’re making it, and who you’re making it for ensures you can create value in every interaction.

Equally important is relationship building: in an industry that constantly evolves, no one can thrive in isolation. My network and the relationships I’ve cultivated within it are vital to my growth and learning, as they provide ongoing insights into emerging trends and best practices.

Finally, sales and negotiation skills are key to achieving mutual success—genuine wins occur when both parties feel they’ve gained value. Over the years, I’ve learned that the definition of a “win” can vary greatly depending on perspective, and being able to align interests and share that win is a rewarding experience.

What do you believe is the most important aspect of a team?

Dependence and trust are fundamental to a high-performing team. When team members recognize and honor their individual roles in supporting one another, and can rely on receiving the same support in return, the team reaches its highest level of productivity and cohesion.

What would you say are your initial goals with joining the Pentaflex team?

My initial goals are to understand Pentaflex’s company culture and values, build relationships with my new colleagues, and learn what exactly has made Pentaflex such a success over the years.

What drew you to Pentaflex?

Pentaflex was a former client of mine a few years ago. During that time, I had the opportunity to learn about the different products they were developing. It’s exciting to now be working alongside many of the same individuals, transitioning from a client relationship to one of collaboration.

What does a typical day look like for you in your role, and how do you prioritize new opportunities versus maintaining existing relationships?

A typical day for me begins with reviewing my schedule to ensure alignment with my weekly priorities. I’m a strong advocate of the ‘eat the frog’ approach—tackling the most important or challenging task first thing in the day. I often break these larger tasks into 20-minute focused work blocks using the Pomodoro technique, which helps maintain momentum and avoid burnout.

Prioritizing new opportunities versus maintaining existing relationships often comes down to impact and timing. I assess the strategic value of new initiatives while ensuring that our current partnerships are nurtured consistently. Having a reliable, knowledgeable team allows me to delegate effectively and maintain this careful balance. Their support is critical in making sure both areas get the attention they deserve.

How do you identify and pursue potential markets or industries that are a good fit for Pentaflex’s capabilities?

Identifying and pursuing potential markets begins with a deep and honest evaluation of our core capabilities. At Pentaflex, decades of experience and an extensive collection of operational data provide valuable insight into what we do best and where our current limitations lie.

I start by translating this knowledge into a ‘capabilities report card’—a clear assessment of our strengths, gaps, and areas of opportunity. From there, I can map these strengths against the demands and expectations of various market and industry segments. This alignment ensures that we’re targeting opportunities where we can not only compete, but excel—allowing us to pursue new markets with confidence.

What role does customer feedback play in shaping your business development strategy?

Customer feedback is a cornerstone of any business development strategy—I see it as a valuable gift. It provides direct insight into what’s working and where we can improve. By consistently evaluating and acting on this feedback, we’re able to refine our products, enhance our processes, and sharpen our strategy.

How do you work with the engineering and production teams to ensure new projects are both feasible and profitable?

Striking the right balance between feasibility and profitability starts with clear, data-driven communication. While informed opinions—especially from experienced team members—are incredibly valuable, we aim to translate those insights into quantifiable data that can guide sound decisions.

I place a high level of trust in our engineering and production teams to flag potential challenges early, allowing us to address them collaboratively and efficiently. Bringing everyone together from the start ensures that new projects are not only innovative and cost-effective, but also realistic and achievable.

What trends are you seeing in the manufacturing sector that are influencing your approach to growth and partnerships?

The adoption of lightweight, high-strength metals—such as advanced high-strength steel—remains a key driver of growth in manufacturing, especially in the automotive and heavy truck industries, where fuel efficiency and long-term performance are essential. These materials are also gaining momentum in the electronics and industrial sectors, where structural integrity and safety are critical requirements.

In parallel, strategic partnerships between manufacturers and end-use industries are becoming increasingly important. Collaborations between customer and supplier offer mutual advantages – like leveraging a supplier’s technical expertise to drive product innovation and improve cost. Looking ahead, I believe that the integration of advanced manufacturing technologies—including AI, robotics, and IoT—is poised to become central to production strategy.

When you’re not at work, how do you like to spend your free time?

I enjoy hanging out with my husband, our two sons, and our two dogs. I like to play golf. I’m an avid NHL fan, especially during the playoffs. I also enjoy volunteering my time to a number of different charities in my local community.

Is there anything else you’d like to share?

I’m very excited to have joined such an amazing team at Pentaflex, and I’m looking forward to what the future has in store for this company!
